WOMB TO TOMB

WOMB TO TOMB

GALLERY ART INDUS, NEW DELHI

CURATED BY ART CRITIC UMA NAIR

Unending statistics and news speak to us about the vulnerability of women and girls  all over the world. They are  victims of countless and senseless acts of violence. The range of gender-based violence is devastating, occurring, quite literally, from womb to tomb. Its not just Indian, it  occurs across spectrums of society, regardless of class, ethnicity, culture, or whether the country is at peace or war.

This is the context for Womb To Tomb a  multi-media  contemporary art exhibition that utilizes works by well known artists and sculptors  to promote awareness of the root causes/effects  of violence against women.

Uma Nair’s sonnet Requiem for Rape is the backdrop of  inspiration for this small exhibition to create more than just  empathy for women’s stories; it must aim at fostering  a dialogue about the pervasiveness of violence against women. It also looks at the need for empowering women and girls with choices and behavioural patterns that will look at the future.

Any thing visual or verbal has  great potential , the stories that underlie these artworks help us feel and understand the essence of the problem of violence against women around the world.

The poem forms the abacus and axis of thought. Art must ferment social change and push the envelope so as to shed new light on an atrocity that is as old as civilization itself. WOMB TO TOMB
